Q. What was your first gig?

As a front man with my single “State of Grace”, it was at the closing night of this weekly party here in NYC called Calypso run by my dear friends Kevin Wiltz and Frank Carrasquillo. In general… I played Danny Zuko in a rendition we did in elementary school of Grease hahah. I know every moved from John travolta’s character. I was such a Grease fan growing up. I guess my family got the hint I was a stage person lol

Q. What was your first milestone as a musical artist?

Well, like I said before, music has been part of my life so recalling a  first milestone would be going back to my elementary school. But in present days, State of Grace made me realized once again what I want as an artist and as performer. It fed that passion for the stage, I was always someone’s back up dance and this song put me in the spotlight and it was magical. So it was a wake up call and a good one!

Q. What is it like getting into the music industry?

HARD!!! But none said life was easy or anything in it. So its just matter of following your passion

 Q. What would you tell up and coming artists that are trying to get into the industry?

“Keep aiming for the stars”.. that’s one of the quotes I live by

.Q. Is there a cover from any artist that you have not done yet that you would love to record and why?

Yes,  a medley with 80’s Madonna songs, a tribute to Britney Spears and “The show must go on” by Queen. Yeah, im a pop person but my heart is pure Rock lol

Q. When people listen to music from Eddy Barrena, what do you want them to remember about your music?

That it was made from the heart and passion more than just a lucrative thing.  Plus I want people to have fun and experience every feeling in each song

Q. How would you want someone to describe a Eddy Barrena concert when seeing you live to others?

POP!

(photograph by: Seth London)

Q. Who are some of your role models inside and out of the music industry and why?

Madonna and Michael Jackson. Come on, they open the door for everyone in the present days. Britney Spears is my idol. She made love performing when I was walking away from it. Her music her attitude plus she’s a survivor. Shakira, we are compatriots and I’ve seen her become this huge international superstar. And my mother.. she’s a warrior!!!

 Q. What are some of the lessons that you have learned thus far in the music business?

To be tough and stand on what u believe or you will be left behind. Stay true to who you are

 Q. Is there a dream venue for you to perform at, why?

Madison Square Garden, ive seen so many big artist perform there, that every time I see them I channel myself doing it. Its just the biggest arena to perform in the planet, you know u r a star when u r performing there. And The MTV VMA’s stage lol I would loooove to be part of their line-up one year

Q. Eddy currently you are filming your music video for “S.E.E.X.X” tell us the experience and what we can look forward to.

Well, I cant give away all the details but the video is a mix of Burlesque, lace, hot bodies and S.E.E.X.X.

Q. Your fans love your current tracks: “S.E.E.X.X” & “State of Grace” how do you come-up with the hot beats and sound for these tracks?

Well the producers created the beats. Brandon Pope, who also Co-wrote the lyrics, produced State of Grace. It was an instant chemistry. We sat down and decided to pin a song about how you feel when you go out and all you do is get into the music, almost like a spiritual experience, reason why we called it State of Grace.

For S.E.E.X.X, Luca Prudente, an Italian producer who also did all my State of Grace Remixes, produced the beat and also talented Devon Perry did the vocals. I wrote the Lyrics. Yea, I’m a sexual person. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

Q. Aside from being a singer/songwriter you are an accomplished model, will we be seeing you in future projects in this area?

Sure!. I started as a model. I will never let that go, even if I’m 80!. I have some collaborations in the bag for books and art shows. Plus Modeling keeps me in the radar and that can also help my music career

Q. Take us through the process when you write a song. Do you usually write from recent experiences or draw from personal stories or other areas?

Yeah. I like to write about what I go tru in the moment. I get inspired by experiences, tv shows, music fashion. So when the muses hit me, I just sit  down and write it. And if I’m not close to a piece of paper.. I just save them on my phone. I’m passionate about the creative process of making music.

Q. Eddy, you are a successful artist who is a singer and songwriter what have you found is the most challenging and why?

Everything is a challenge. Getting better each day, doing researches, practicing and even sometimes telling your mind to stop when you know you get what you wanted.  As an artist,  I wanna do better and better and better. I’m a dancer and I always try to improve my abilities. Every day is a new challenge.

Q. Tell us about the new track: “S.E.E.X.X” that many of your fans (such as me) have heard the original track/remix.

Well S.E.E.X.X celebrates human nature, being sexual beings. Its one of those songs you wanna lounge and feel sexy with. It’s a song about sex but done in a clever not too explicit way. You gotta use your imagination!

Q. You are writing currently more music for your up-coming released EP, tell us about some of these new tracks and what we can look forward to in the sounds and feel.

Yeah. Well, I love all kinda music, so that will be reflected in the final product. The name of the album is (most likely, and to be confirmed) “Colosseum”. In the album there’s a track with the same title, it’s a hip-hop/pop track I wrote towards the haters, trust me if we were in the Roman Empire and I was Caesar, I will unleash the lions lol, that’s just a metaphor. Obviously, you are familiar with State of Grace and S.E.E.X.X, both different songs but very special in their own style. Then we have a more Pop-Clubby track called “Get Reedy”. I’m also working in 2 tracks in Spanish and a rock-pop song. You’re gonna find something to relate to. I don’t wanna just make one kinda sound. I wanna experiment with different styles, now that I have the chance.

Q. 2012 is starting off great for you to be a successful year, what else will we be looking forward to from you this year?

More music, more videos, more modeling…

Q. Eddy, you are an accomplished artist, is there another area that you would love to venture into and why?
Filmmaking and Fashion. I went to school for filmmaking but being a dancer/model/singer, I always ended up in front of a camera. Now I wanna take the step to produce and direct too. I’m a visual person. When I write song I also visualize a music video, so yea don’t be surprise if I come up with some short film or whatever lol

Q. What made you get into the music industry?

My background as a dancer and theater guy. I was part of the drama club and the dance crew in High school and college. I grew up in a very musical family. No, none of them play instrument or sing but they always have music in the house.

Q. Is there an artist on your “must list” that you would love to collaborate with?

3 artist. Britney Spears, Madonna and Shakira.

Jennifer Hudson & Ne-Yo "Think Like A Man!" (Feat. Rick Ross)

Jennifer Hudson & Ne-Yo "Think Like A Man!"
(Featuring Rick Ross) from the movie soundtrack: "Think Like A Man."

Jennifer Hudson teams up with Ne-Yo and Rick Ross for a hot track and music video entitled: "Think Like A Man" which is aptly titled from the movie soundtrack it comes from. The video is directed by Chris Robinson and shows Jennifer being torn by two men being Kevin Hart and Ne-Yo who she ends up with the later. The song is out now and available at iTunes and so is the music video!

The song is featured in the motion picture "Think Like A Man" which is based on Steve Harvey's best-selling book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man." The film stars Chris Brown, Meagan Good, Kelly Rowland, Taraji P. Henson, Michael Ealy, LaLa Vazquez and Arielle Kebbel.

Love the lyrics to the song which are:
Why you call me your dream bed/And foolish of me I believe that/You said every king needs his queen babe/That's why you needed me baby/Right in between lost and love/You go and mess things up/Now there's no we babe/There's just you and there's me baby/There was us, there was trust/There was happen and change, I know/Silly you, silly me, silly us, what a waste/But in love, love, love/You gotta act like a woman and think like a man/But in love, love, love/You gotta act like a woman and think like a man

Glimmer Has Big Emotions: The Interview (part 2)

Glimmer Has Big Emtions: The Interview (Part 2)

Here is our 2nd part of the 3 installment series with the exclusive interview with Glimmer and the lead singer Van Hechter. The band “Glimmer” is taking over the airwaves and everyone’s attention with their brand of electro-pop along with their evolution along the way. They are a band that takes a metamorphosis on both their sound and look which keeps them fresh and amazing to watch. This band stands out in each track and music video. Glimmer’s current album is: “Wouldn’t Change a Thing” that has created hits/hot music videos: “Big Emotions” “Wouldn’t Change a Thing”& “Disco Predilection.”

Currently, the band is getting ready to release an EP of remixes and also another highly anticipated album with more originally written material. I was able to sit down for “Let That Beat Hit You!”
with Van Hechter the lead singer of the band in Boston and speak about all things “Glimmer.” Van is a total gentleman and a sharp dresser as we walked around Boston and sat in the lobby of his hotel  talking about the band, up-coming projects and much more so enjoy!

Q. Who are some of the artists that are part of your “dream list” that you would love to collaborate with?

-          The main inspiration; my texts. Right now I mostly work with Baptiste Gissinger; I feel he is my video soul mate. Shame he does not want to become a film maker...
When watching your music videos and seeing you live you do a metamorphosis where you simply adapt and have many looks this is simply not seen with many artists,

Q. Van you are very successful with keeping your look and sound fresh and evolving, where do you draw from your inspiration?

                - I would love to work with Adam Pallin (Little Jackie), I would love to work with Dimitri From Paris, and lord lord lord I would just be on my knees if, say, Giorgio Moroder wrote me an album...

Q. Tell us what is on board for you in 2012 for projects.

                - Again; I am really just being myself... If this business gives me a few years of fruitfulness, you will see that some themes reappear periodically... I am a complex person, and if I'm going to show you who I am, I have to submit you to the different moods, even the different truths...

Q. Where do you draw upon for inspiration when writing new material?

                - 2012; new album, new videos, new fans I think. 2012; also, on the side, the conceptualizing process of album 3...

Q. What would you tell up and coming artists that are trying to get into the industry?

                - Most of my texts are personal; I basically am the most honest when I put something in a song. Lol; rest of the stuff I say part is bull!!!!!! All of what I'll never say to your face gets expressed in a song; this is the inspiration behind each track...

Q. Tell us how the band came about getting the name “Glimmer”?
A. - We wanted a "disco" name; "Glitter", "Glitz", "Glam"... We wanted something humorous, which reminded us of flashing lights and sequins... Then we wondered; what would the looser version of "super flashy" be? Just a Glimmer. lol.
Sometimes I say it's because meeting my music partner was like a glimmer of hope in a really really dark career, lol.
Q. Van, you and your band “Glimmer” are a Montreal based group that is steadily gaining an international fan base, what do you think makes your band stand-out and are getting exposure over many others?
A. - What makes us distinct is our very "out-of-the-box" personalities. Dr. Jerome (my musician) has to be the most original, self-made man I've ever met. He has very strong, unusual opinions about EVERYTHING. This translates in his music... I have always been an outcast, even among the outcasts. I take nothing too seriously. I could never be among the trendy rebels who are caught up in themselves... A part of me always says (at parties, at fashion shows); "Really? Are we really such hot shit?? ---- No we aren't, we are nothing, and none of this is important"... This translates in my writing and in my voice.
Q. Tell us about how you came about writing your up-coming sophomore album.
A. - This second album is our first real album, lol. It reflects who we are, -- like we have come into ourselves... At first we didn't know each other. And I trust with difficulty... Now I just feel comfortable with Jerome, musically.
Q. You have a new single coming out, tell us about it and the inspiration for it.
- "Love to Live", is much about how all humans feel when they are burning the candle at both ends... Remember; when you were 22???
It's all about over doing everything and going for more... It's like hyper-living at that age, or extreme-emotion... We shot a very simple video, in the middle of Montreal for that track, more or less in all the spots where I personally experienced some of my ultra-living lol.
Q. Your music as of this moment is electro-pop and your voice is great for it, are there other styles you would love to venture into?
- We want to explore different genres; all the genres that we love will eventually be incorporated...
Q. Often male artists have made statements; DJs are not really interested in playing male dance/pop artists, only the divas, do you agree or disagree with this and why?
- If you are catchy enough; they will play you. --- And hey; life is such a bitch for women in many regards, if we get to deal with mild discrimination here; big deal!!!
Q. As an openly gay artist, has this made it more difficult to shatter the wall for success in the music business?
- As an openly gay man; things are harder, period. But I wouldn't change a thing.
Q. Do you have anyone in the music industry that is out, that you are impressed by and think truly paved the way for you?
- Freddie Mercury... I wear a moustache sometimes, literally in his honor. He scared the shit out of me as a child. But he was just so blunt about who he was (in his gestures, in his look, in his songs), -- he didn't even need to make statements. He just WAS. I love that man.
Q. What does it mean to you to be an openly out artist?
- It means I can never go back in the closet again, EVER!
Q. You done terrific music videos for your last singles: “Wouldn’t Change a Thing” “Disco Predilection” & “Big Emotions” tell us your inspirations for these videos.

- "Wouldn't Change A Thing" was a collaboration with my brother-in-law... I remember I wanted to start off clean and less goofy than I normally am... I love what came out of that first idea...
But came "Disco Predilection", the sequel... That's where trouble started lol; in this video, I am almost doing a parody of what I was doing in the first clip...
From then on; I present a character that is less and less in control of him... Just like arriving at a classy party which eventually degenerates hahahhaha.
